Subway accessibility (station facilities)

Facility improvements, etc. are being actively moved forward so that Osaka Metro can be used safely, securely, and comfortably.

Escalators/elevators

Osaka Metro has completed the construction of “one route” (a wheelchair accessible route) at all 133 Osaka Metro and New Tram stations, and for transfer routes at all transfer stations to ensure smooth travel in all stations.
Going forward, improvement efforts will continue to create multiple accessible routes and develop transfer routes to other companies’ railway stations in order to increase convenience for passengers.

Automatic platform gates

  • Automatic platform gates are being installed to prevent accidental falls from the platform and collisions with trains.

The installation of automatic platform gates will continue going forward.

Measures against uneven surface levels/gaps

  • Together with the installation of automatic platform gates, efforts are being implemented to minimize uneven surface levels and gaps between the platform and train floor to enable passengers in wheelchairs and using strollers, etc. to smoothly get on and off the trains.
  • Measures Against Uneven Surface Levels: The platform floor is sloping upwards toward the trains.
Measures Against Gaps: Comb-like configured material (rubber) for gaps at platform edges is being installed to minimize (20 mm - 30 mm) gaps to the extent that the trains and platform do not touch.

Uneven surface levels Gaps
Nagahori Tsurumi-ryokuchi Line (all stations) 0 mm - 15 mm approx. 20 mm
Sennichimae Line (all stations) 0 mm - 20 mm approx. 30 mm
Midosuji Line* (Shinsaibashi/Tennoji) 0 mm - 50 mm approx. 30 mm

* Please be aware there is a significant difference between surface levels for some trains on the Midosuji Line since there is a mix of trains with different floor levels, and care should be taken when getting on and off.

In addition to these efforts, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and Kinki District Transport Bureau have presented an award to Osaka Metro for promoting accessibility through efforts such as creating “one routes” (wheelchair accessible routes) using elevators.

Multi-function toilet

  • In addition to improving facilities and creating spaces that are easy-to-use for persons in wheelchairs, ostomate toilets and infant cribs have been installed to facilitate use of multi-function toilets by a variety of people.
Furthermore, there are ongoing efforts to install accessible facilities in ordinary restrooms that have been undergoing renovations since 2012, including infant cribs where possible and ostomate toilets installed in the men’s and women’s toilet (1 stall each).
